Sisters in Arms

Courageous women of the reformation

by Sukeshinie Goonatilleke

This Paperback version of Sisters in Arms is also available as an eBook and Audiobook.

The Reformation was led by men like Luther, Calvin and Zwingli who revolutionised their world and ours. But there were also many remarkable women who defied social biases and traditions with a dauntless commitment to God’s Word.

These are the true stories of eight of these women: follow Katharina von Bora as she escapes from a convent to start a revolutionary new life; flee Paris with Charlotte Duplessis de Mornay, who wrote an eyewitness account of the gruesome St Bartholomew's Day massacre; and learn about the new faith with Queen Katherine Parr, the only one of Henry VIII’s wives to survive him.

These women were heads of state, writers, activists, poets and scholars but they were also very human, with their own loves, fears, heartbreaks and temptations. When we are called to stand for our faith, we can be inspired by their legacy.

Sukeshinie Goonatilleke has done a great job at re-telling these amazing stories of faith and courage about women who faced the most horrendous situations and remained faithful. I have read many true stories about heroes of faith and Goonatilleke has been true to the time and facts. My 14-year-old daughter has also read this book and she thoroughly loved it and has read it more than once.
This book has adventure, faith, love, and hope all the way through the stories. The stories are a great way to share with the next generation the faith of those who gave their lives for the gospel and to inspire them to give their whole hearts to the cause as well.
I highly recommend this book for teenagers and adults.

I read Sisters In Arms at a time when I was facing great anxiety and fear. These incredible stories of women of the Reformation greatly encouraged me that when we fix our eyes on Jesus, store His Word in our hearts and love Him wholeheartedly, nothing that comes our way is too difficult or impossible with God’s power working through us. It also encouraged and challenged me to treasure God’s Word, and commit more of it to memory, to help me in my daily walk as a Christian. If you like a narrative/story style, you will enjoy this re-telling of these biographies in brief format. I especially love that each story is one short chapter. This makes it easy to squeeze in a story here and there into my busy life, as I normally don’t have time to read through a whole book straight through very often in a short time.

This book makes reading history a pleasure. The author combines historical information with an engaging storyline, making the book hard to put down. This book will strengthen the reader’s history/Christian history knowledge while connecting you to the characters in a relatable way. After I finished the book I looked up the author to see if she had published any other similar titles. I really recommend this book.

Sometimes it is easy to read about the great reformers and wonder how we could ever accomplish anything as grand or heroic as they did. But when you read their stories, you cannot help but be inspired.
First-time author, Sukeshinie Goonatilleke provides eight such stories in her new book Sisters in Arms. But these stories are not those of familiar reformers like Martin Luther and John Calvin. Instead they tell about eight female heroes of the Reformation.
Due to the social constructs of the time, women did not usually have the same education and opportunities as men. But this did not mean that women were denied influence, faith or courage.
Some of the women in this book broke with tradition and blazed a new trail for those who would come after them, like Katharina von Bora, who as the wife of Martin Luther set an example for other wives of faith. Then there are those like Queen Katherine Parr and Louise de Coligny, who lived in royal courts and rubbed shoulders with the elite of society, yet still maintained their faith in God.
Queen Margaret of Navarre and Olympia Morata wrote books on their faith that influenced many across Europe. Then there were seemingly ordinary women like Marie Durand. She was not a theologian or a scholar, but her unwavering commitment to God’s Word through 38 years of imprisonment speaks to each of us.
The stories in Sisters in Arms are captivating, action-packed and moving, and they encourage us as we attempt to navigate challenges in our own lives. On the surface, our challenges might seem different to those of these women, but at their core they are very much the same: issues of faithfulness to God, commitment to His Word and deeper education in spiritual things. As you read Sisters in Arms, you will be able to look to their examples of faith and courage to guide you no matter what you face in the future.

“For all who see themselves as children of the Reformation, it is vital to learn about the women who helped lead this movement. As I read these action-packed stories, these Protestant women emerged with deep historical detail as fully human, with emotions and flaws just like me. What an inspiration!”
