In the Name of Jesus

Power to pray for people and places

by Ron Clouzet

What if, instead of praying for an effective strategy to reach the lost, we realise prayer is the strategy?

In most industrialised nations, the spread of the gospel is painfully slow. “The workers are few” (Luke 10:2, NIV) due in large part to the prevailing culture of protecting privacy and personal space. Though some are willing to knock on doors or to preach in public, most would never consider participating in such assertive outreach.

Yet introverted and privacy-conscious Christians need not be left out of evangelism! We usually think of prayer in a supporting role to ministry; but when it comes to large cities or other challenging fields, small or large, a prayer plan that works is the first and most important step.

If you know how to walk and talk to God at the same time, you can have an effective soul-winning ministry. Prayer walking is something everyone can do: youth with their friends after school, young mothers with their children in strollers, retired people who walk for their health, or those who walk during work breaks.

In Dr. Ron Clouzet’s In the Name of Jesus, you will read inspiring stories about successful prayer walkers and learn the historical precedent for prayer walking, Bible promises related to answered prayer, legal issues God faces related to answering prayers on behalf of others, and strategies for developing your own prayer-walking program.

There’s no better time than today to make a real, positive difference in your community through prayer walking. It’s great exercise too! Those who can’t walk can roll (in a car, bike, or wheelchair) or do a virtual prayer walk with a map or an app like Google Earth.

[ Bookshelf Review ]
Like many people, I’ve cultivated the habit of a daily walk around my neighbourhood in the past year or so. The pandemic has kept a lot of us closer to home. But Ron Clouzet’s book In the Name of prompted me to think of my daily stroll as more than just an opportunity for fresh air and exercise. He opens by pointing out that yearly global population growth outstrips Adventist church growth more than 80 times. Despite the reach of media and all the programs we plan, we are increasingly falling behind in sharing the good news of Jesus with the world. We need a new strategy, Pastor Clouzet argues—and that strategy is prayer.
inspiring examples, practical suggestions and discussion questions, ideal for use by small groups, leaders and pastors. The first part teaches how to pray with power—as a proactive way to ally with God in the conflict we are part of everyday. In the second part, he provides practical strategies for breathing new life into the prayer ministry of our churches. While noting that his suggestions while out and about in our communities—prayer walking.
Before reading the book, I was a bit hesitant about the idea of prayer walking, wondering why God wouldn’t hear me just as well if I prayed at home. And He does, as In the Name of Jesus points out. Careful to explain what prayer walking is not, he emphasises that being out in our communities gives us sensitivity to the people who live around us. I was touched by the story of Hudson Taylor, missionary to China, who, overwhelmed by the crowd in the marketplace in Taiping, stopped to pray that God would somehow give him entrance to people’s hearts. Almost immediately a man sought them out, asking what to do about his sins. I think there’s scope for my daily walks around the neighbourhood to be more prayerful—and powerful—too.
