Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White

by James R. Nix

“Brothers and sisters, I commend unto you this book.”

Those words, spoken in 1909, were part of the closing remarks given by Ellen White at the last General Conference session she attended. Sixty five years earlier she’d accepted the call to be the Lord’s messenger. She was seventeen years old. She made it her lifelong ministry to uplift Scripture and to point people to Jesus.

Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White is filled with stories that provide a fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the life and times of Ellen White. Some of the stories will make you smile; others will move you to tears; but all of them show that Ellen White was a very real person who chose to dedicate her life in service to the One she called, “My Father.”

We sometimes forget that our pioneers were all real people—God started our church using real people. Come to think about it, real people are all He still has to finish the work that needs to be complete before Jesus returns.

James R. Nix is a consummate storyteller who is at his finest when sharing stories of early Adventist believers and Mrs. White in particular. Glimpses Into the Life of Ellen White is filled with fascinating accounts that give a behind-the-scenes look at the life of Ellen White and provide a glimpse of the unseen world.

[ Bookshelf Review ]
Now director of the Ellen G White Estate and author of Glimpses into the Life of Ellen White, Jim Nix said it never really occurred to him as a young person that there were people still living who had known Ellen White. To him they were merely historical figures. But, in his 20s, Nix had the privilege of talking with several of White’s grandchildren and other people who remembered her. His view of Ellen White “totally changed” and he started to view her as a real person, which became his motivation for writing this book some years later.
Being young myself, it never occurred to me that Ellen White was called to be God’s messenger at only 17 years old. I felt similar to how Nix felt before he discovered how much of a humble and uplifting woman Mrs White was.
For someone like myself who does not yet fully know their purpose in life, it made me feel hopeful to know that God has a plan for all of us as He did for Ellen White.
Glimpses into the Life of Ellen White is full of stories Nix has compiled into an interesting and inspirational book about Mrs White and her journey with God. The book details not only her ministry of uplifting scripture and pointing people to Christ, but also her humble and welcoming personality at home.
The life of Ellen White points us toward living healthy, spiritual lives and this collection of stories sums it up by highlighting the values and determination of a woman specifically chosen by God. Glimpses into the Life of Ellen White is an engaging read for people who are inquisitive about the life of Ellen White and would love to know more about serving and following in our Father’s footsteps.
