You'll Laugh About This Someday

Devotions for Frazzled Moms

by Melissa Howell

Life is often a blur for busy mums.

Rushing kids to school, to the doctor, to the dinner table, to bed—only to repeat it again the next day. And the next.

So what’s a mum to do?

Mother of four, Melissa Howell speaks to the mess of madness and mayhem that is life with littles, and says, "God calls me into His presence to be still. ‘Be still and know that I am God,’ He invites (Psalm 46:10, NIV)…. This is good news for those of us in mummy-land, who find stillness and quiet hard commodities to come by. Because it means that even if our surroundings are in chaos, our souls can be anchored deep in the stillness that comes from certainty in God’s power.”

You’ll Laugh About This Someday is filled with humour, life lessons, and deeply spiritual insights into the world of motherhood that will encourage and bless mums everywhere. It’s not your typical devotional book. But then again, there’s nothing typical about the adventure we call motherhood!

[ Bookshelf Review ]
When asked to review this book, I jumped at the chance as the title reminded me of what I used to think many years ago when my three children were young and had managed to push my patience to its limits. But Melissa Howell is not only the mother of four children aged under five, two of whom are twins, but also a minister’s wife and a pastor in her own right. As such, she’s well qualified to write about motherhood and its many trying moments.
Each chapter begins with a story from Howell’s day-today parenting challenges, which I am sure most mothers can relate to on some level. As she unpacks the story, she manages to draw a spiritual message from each traumatic event, which not only gives courage to mums going through tough times but also encourages the reader to draw closer to their Saviour as a provider of comfort and support. With all the pressures put on mums, both externally and selfinflicted, it is often hard to find time alone, let alone time to spend in Bible study but this devotional encourages mums to do just that and solves this problem from a “frazzled mom’s” perspective.
You’ll Laugh About This Some Day was engaging from the first sentence. I was completely absorbed by each story as it unfolded and found myself giggling to myself as I related to her experiences. Over the years, I have forgotten how hard motherhood was, with these memories overshadowed by the good times. But I encourage all mums to read this book, not only those who are going through the tough times at the moment but also those who are grandmas like me. We need to be reminded what younger mothers are going through, so we can encourage and help them as they raise their children to also follow a loving Saviour.
